Priced between $300 and $500, the Singer 9960 Quantum Stylist is perfect for professional as well as personal use. Not only is it fully computerized, but this model is packed with handy features that are designed to radically facilitate the sewing process. From the automatic needle threader to the top drop-in bobbin system, this machine literally comes with everything that you may need to enjoy a smooth and practically flawless sewing experience.
This mid-range model is in fact very often used in advanced sewing classes. In fact, when it comes to stitch designs you won’t find better than the Quantum Stylist, specially for such a price. Additionally, other than basic sewing, this particular model is quite good for quilting projects as it comes with a wide, oversized table.
While it amassed a plethora of positive reviews, the Singer 9960 does have a couple of drawbacks. For example, its computerized feature was confusing to some users- especially beginners. Some users claimed that it was a hassle for them to navigate through the different settings because of the computerized feature. A couple of users found that it was much better to use a denim needle on thicker fabrics like denim to avoid jamming. One customer deplored the lack of a USB port which made it hard for her to download additional designs. Other than these few cons, the majority of users claimed to have been satisfied with the varying features that come with this machine.
Size and Weight: 4.5/5
While it is not among the most compact of sewing machines, with a weight of 20 pounds, this particular model is lightweight enough to be moved around the house. You can even carry it to your sewing class if you like to practice on your own machine. Best of all, thanks to its pretty compact size, the machine can fit on just about any standard sewing table, which means that you won’t have to worry about finding an adequate space for it.
Thanks to its solid feel and stability, the Singer 9960 is entirely suited to longer sewing sessions and does not budge like lighter and poorly-built machines.
Ease of Use: 4/5
The Singer 9960 is one of the most advanced computerized machines on the market. It is therefore recommended to more advanced users who will be able to find their way around the panels, functions and touchpad. Because of the 600-built in stitches, this sewing machine even includes a visual reference chart that has been added to the side of the machine for ease of use. While a few beginners claimed to have been confused by the multiple functions, most of them were able to find their way around the machine after some practice.
On a more positive note, however, the computerized function makes it easy to switch between stitches. The automatic stitch length and width can largely facilitate things, especially for beginners. Several users also have issues with trying to thread the needle. However you will be glad to learn that this machine features an automatic threader to facilitate things for elderly users. The machine even comes with an automatic stitch reverse function to help you quickly undo any mishap.
To facilitate ease of use, the boxed packaging even comes with a multilingual instructions booklet to help you with the setting up. The booklet also displays handy tips on using the machine.
Extra Features: 5/5
Users who enjoy quilting will be glad to learn that this particular machine is entirely fitted to accommodate larger projects: the wide table is ideally located to accommodate heavier and larger fabrics for quilts, drapes, curtains and the likes. Because of this feature, you won’t need to find a wider table to place your fabrics and this consequently enhances your comfort during the entire sewing process.
Hailed as one of the most versatile sewing machines on the market, the Singer 9960 also comes with 25 needle positions and 600 stitch designs, which is way more than what you get with more expensive models, such as the Janome HD3000 and Janome DC2014. With an automatic locking stitch function, it even comes with features such as horizontal threading, drop feed with box feed motion, free arm to help you attach pant hems and sleeves and other similar features.
Some users only have time to sew at night and this can be problematic because of the lack of bright, natural light. To counteract this, the Singer 9960 includes no less than two Stay Bright LED lights designed to provide a visible and bright surface area for you to work in- no matter how dark or bright it is outside.
The large backlit LCD screen comes with a fully-adjustable control feature, enabling you to select your own level of light intensity. Another exclusive feature which this machine presents is the stitch editing capability: this allows users to closely copy stich designs of your choosing. You can also benefit from no less than thirteen automatic buttonhole styles to help you sew perfectly-sized button in a mere matter of minutes. Contrary to hand-sewn buttons, this feature will prevent the much-dreaded gaps and fabric distortion. The electronic auto-pilot and speed control provides you with complete control over various aspects of your sewing like the speed and pace.
If you want all the features, but can’t afford to splurge for a professional-quality machine, the Singer 9960 is certainly a recommended buy. Especially recommended to more experienced users, the machine will assist you as you craft anything from clothes to quilts, curtains, covers and other similar accessories. Its powerful motor provides you with enough power to maintain a speedy sewing rhythm, even when you’re working with much thicker fabrics. On the other hand, if you want to decrease your sewing speed, you can also make use of the automatic slow-down feature.
