The Brother PE770 is a high quality embroidery machine, perfect for home embroidery or even for starting an embroidery business. Since it only costs between $500 and $600, you won’t even have to spend a fortune to get a machine packed with professional-grade features.
The PE770 boasts of a 5 x 7″ maximum embroidery area with hoop included and the ability to work with a 5″ x 12″ by multi-hooping. It comes with 136 built-in designs that can be easily expanded with your own designs thanks to its USB port. As for the editing feature, on its LCD display you can increase and decrease your design’s size as well as rotate and mirror-image.
This Brother sewing machine is also compatible with the popular iBroidery application, which will enable you to very easily purchase a wide variety of exclusive embroidery designs. These designs include unique patterns that represent licensed characters from Pixar, Nickelodeon, Disney and the likes. Perfect for commercial projects, the machine comes with a wide variety of built-in lettering fonts for monogramming.
This particular piece of sewing equipment also has the added advantage of being surprisingly easy to use, which is why it’s also recommended to beginners. The automatic needle threader this machine comes with is the best out there, and together with its auto thread cutter will make your embroidering an even more enjoying experience.
A few drawbacks have been reported about this model. For example, one user claimed to have had issues with the threading as well as the winding option and found that both functions resulted in a series of snags. An inexperienced user also complained about the computerized feature, which she found to be on the more complicated side. Apart from these, however, the machine has received mostly positive feedback and is still a much recommended embroidery machine.
Embroidery Area: 4.5/5
The Brother PE770 is equipped with a spacious 5 x 7” embroidery area. This consequently enables you to work with far wider expanses of fabrics designed to help you apply your embroidery on curtains, towels, bedspreads, tablecloths and the likes. The wide embroidery area is also designed to enhance your comfort since you’ll have plenty of space to work in. Therefore, sewers will be able to manipulate the fabric in just about any angle they want for more precision in their embroidering.
Ease of Use: 5/5
The PE770 is surprisingly easy to use, considering its extensive display of features. Granted, the computerized functions can appear complicated to less experienced users at first but once they get the hang of it, the features are actually quite simple to navigate through. In fact, an instructions manual is also included to simplify the functions.
This particular model has been entirely designed for comfort and ease of use: for example, sewers will be able to make the most out of its automatic needle threader to conveniently guide the thread through the eye of the needle with absolutely no effort from your part. All users really need to do is follow the numbered threading chart printed on the machine and consequently thread the needle in a mere matter of seconds. Similarly, the machine also boasts of a quick-set bobbin which enables you to start embroidering with minimal preparation.
As far as ease of use is concerned, sewers can also benefit from the auto thread trimmer for a polished and professional finish. Therefore, you simply need to touch a button to activate the machine into trimming the lower and upper threads.
Extra Features: 5/5
The PE770 comes with a 5×7 inches hoop, which is its maximum embroidery area. The 5″ x 7″ hoop is big enough for most projects and is the largest you’re going to find for a machine at this price. In case that you find a project that doesn’t fit in the 5×7 area, a design and a name for example, you don’t need to go for a machine with a bigger hoop and pay a huge difference for it, you can always embroider the design, re-hoop and then add the name!
Additionally, you can (and should) purchase the 2×3, 4×4 and 5×12 hoops for this machine. The 2×3 and 4×4 hoops you will use for smaller projects so that you can save on stabilizer, while the 5×12 hoop, although wont expand your embroidery area, will allow you to embroider bigger projects with less rehooping.
The Brother PE770 is enhanced with a built-in memory system that allows you to easily import as many embroidery items as you want from a USB stick. With this particular feature, you can also import several embroidery designs purchased online. In fact, it is even possible to download as many machine updates as you want to ensure that it remains up-to-date and equipped with the latest digital features.
It comes with an impressive 136 built-in embroidery designs. The number of designs, however, shouldn’t be a deciding factor when choosing the PE770 considering that importing designs downloaded from the internet is quite easy thanks to its USB port. You will find that some of the built-in designs are nice, but then, if you look around the internet you will find plenty of fabulous designs (many of them for free) which can be easily downloaded and added to your own collection, then you can transfer them to a thumb drive, plug it to the PE770 and start stitching!
With its embroidery speed of 650 stitches-per-minute it will take you about 15 minutes to make your typical design, which is not much considering that you can work on something else while the machine does its job. Nevertheless, if you really want something faster you should be willing to pay a big jump on price for a machine of the same other specifications such as the Janome Memory Craft 11000 and the Janome Horizon 12000.
Some basic editing can be done quite easily on the machine’s LCD touch screen, such as adjusting the stitch density, which comes useful when embroidering fabrics of different densities, as well as changing the design’s size and some other few editing tasks. However it’s important to notice that the LCD display is monochrome, which means that you won’t be able to see the different colors of your design in it, though you can still see them on full color on your computer by transferring them with a thumb drive.
On bottom line, its great user friendliness, its big 5″ x 7″ embroidery field and its USB port that allows you to import unlimited number of designs make the PE770 one of the best embroidery machines on the market.
The Brother PE770 is an embroidery-only machine, which means that it doesn’t perform the functions of a normal sewing machine, though if already own a sewing machine or if you’re just looking to personalize your home with monograms and other designs, then you should give this machine a try.
